We all know what wastes do, but very few people are even aware of the different types of wastes available and what the difference between them all actually is.

We like to keep everything nice and easy for our customers, which includes understanding the type of products we offer. That’s why we’ve created a guide on the different types of basin wastes to help you decide which one is right for you.

Slotted Vs. Unslotted Waste

Firstly, it’s important to note that there are two main different types of basin wastes available. Fortunately, it’s easier to tell which waste you need, so long as you have already chosen your basin.

  • if your basin is encapsulated then you require a slotted waste.
  • if your basin is not encapsulated then you will need an unslotted waste and a separate overflow pipe.

It’s important to ensure you know which to buy as fitting the wrong waste can result in your overflow not working, water leaking onto your floor or even both.

If at any point you are unsure if you need a slotted or unslotted waste, then please do contact us on 0333 305 8200. We’re always happy to help!

What Is An Overflow?

Now that you know the difference between a slotted and unslotted waste, it's important for you to know what an overflow actually is.

The overflow is a small hole, which is used to prevent water overflowing when the tap is running. However, the water still needs to go somewhere which is why you need a slotted waste if your basin has an overflow hole. If you fit an unslotted waste, then the water will reach the overflow and go nowhere – rendering it useless. Fit a slotted waste in a basin without an overflow hole and you’ll find yourself dealing with a very nasty leak.

The Different Types of Basin Wastes

Depending on the type of style you’re trying to achieve, you’re going to want to take a look at all of our wastes available, including:

Flip Top Basin Waste

Flip top wastes are the best option if you’re looking for a minimalist design. These wastes are hinged on either side vertically, which allows the stopper to rotate so the water can either drain or fill the basin.

The flip top waste is available unslotted or slotted , so make sure you install the correct one for your basin!

Press Top Waste

Captive wastes are perfect for those looking for a secure option for their basin. The stopper is secured to the waste and cannot be removed, preventing vandalism – ideal for public bathrooms and businesses.

Plug And Chain Basin Waste

Our plug and chain waste is designed to compliment the more traditional bathrooms. Operation is simple: pull the chain to remove the plug or simply push the plug in the hole to seal it up.

This waste is a slotted waste so it’s important to remember that it can only be installed in basins with an overflow hole.

What About Bath Wastes?

The basic functions and different types of wastes available do not differ much in bath wastes. Fortunately, the only difference is how the overflow is connected directly to the waste via a waste pipe.

It’s important to note that bath wastes do not come in slotted variations – as the waste is connected to the overflow directly.
