Toilets are possibly the least exciting thing, despite being the second most used item in the bathroom (just behind basins). There’s no wonder it can be a little stressful when mulling over the different toilet styles available. Picking the right toilet first time around is crucial to prevent your entire household falling into chaos over the lack of a functioning toilet!

Bathroom Takeaway’s philosophy revolves around making the buying process of bathrooms as straightforward as possible. So, if you’re in need of a little advice or even just some bathroom makeover inspiration, our guides are the right place to be!

Before You Begin…

A bit of plumbing knowledge always comes in handy when considering doing anything with a toilet, whether out of necessity or choice.

Every UK toilet has a spigot (parallel to the floor) which connects to the back of a toilet pan. The spigot then connects to the soil pipe. The soil pipe connects to the outflow pipe which is what the waste flows through after a flush.

Before buying a toilet, it’s best to know whether your pipework is compatible with the toilet you’re looking to buy. If not, then don’t buy the toilet or look for a flexible connector and/or check with your plumber to see if there’s a way around the issue.

Types Of Toilets

You’re prepped and ready to buy a toilet, but if you’re like most people, then you won’t have a clue what the difference between most toilets are – and why would you? It can be quite confusing but our easy guide below shows the different types of toilets available to help you make an informed decision.

Close Coupled Toilets

The most common types of toilets within the UK,close coupled toilets are fixed to the floor with the cistern behind it. There are two types of close-coupled toilets under this category: close-coupled and Closed-back toilets.

Opened Back leaves room behind the pan so that the soil pipe can be connected from any direction, making it one of the more popular designs. This type of toilet is especially common in older houses, as many have a cast iron pipe which is not easily moved.

The Closed Back has sides which go straight back from the pan and touch the wall. These toilets are easier to clean as you do not need to reach around the back of the toilet to clean it. However, do not confuse these for back to wall toilets , which are very different and have a concealed cistern.

Back To Wall Toilets

Back to wall toilets are great space savers. The cistern can be hidden behind a false wall, or concealed within a WC unit which adds a stylish flair to your bathroom. As an added bonus, your WC unit can be paired with other matching furniture for that polished finish. Back to Wall toilets are floor mounted similarly to Close Coupled toilets.

Wall Hung Toilets

Predictably like the name, wall mounted toilets are hung from a low height using a frame hidden within a wall, making them a stylish alternative to standard toilets. Wall hung toilets are easy to clean and can make small bathrooms feel bigger by not taking up floor space.

Cistern And Frames

Unlike Close Coupled toilets, Wall Hung and Back to Wall toilets do not always come supplied with a cistern, and Wall Hung toilets require a frame. But don’t worry, we have you covered.

At Bathroom Takeaway, we sell the toilets, cisterns and frames for Wall Hung and Back to Wall toilets both separately and together so you can buy only what you need.
